The Future-You Savings Letter
Saving can feel like handing money to a stranger. That is not a metaphor. In a brain-imaging study, thinking about your future self produced activity closer to thinking about a stranger than about yourself (Ersner-Hershfield, Wimmer and Knutson, 2009). This workbook is the paper version of the fix: make future-you vivid, write them a letter, then do one small pre-decided action. What is inside, honestly counted: a 7-page printable workbook (US Letter PDF, prints fine in black and white). One 60-second vividness exercise you finish before writing anything. One structured letter template in six pieces, with a worked example beside every blank. One ruled page to assemble the letter, with the complete worked letter shown. One pre-decided action page. Three cited studies, plus an honest-notes page on exactly what they do and do not show. The honest limits, printed inside: the letter method's direct evidence is from an exercise study (Rutchick et al., 2018). The savings evidence is correlational or lab-based (Ersner-Hershfield 2009; Hershfield et al., 2011). No study has tested this workbook as a package. This is a psychology exercise about who your money is for. It is education, not financial advice. It never tells you where to put money, how much, or what to expect back.
