App Research System — Validate Your App Idea Before You Build It
I've shipped 50+ apps. The ones that failed didn't fail on code — they failed because the App Store already had ten free apps doing the same thing, and I'd have known in 30 minutes if I'd looked first. This is the looking-first, packaged. You can build. That's not your bottleneck. Your bottleneck is building the wrong thing — three months on an app that ships to twelve downloads because the market was saturated or nobody wanted it. The fix isn't talent; it's a research pass before you commit. The existing options are useless: idea-validation ebooks are advice with no tooling, real app-intelligence platforms cost hundreds a month and want a sales call, and AI "market analysis" wrappers just hallucinate competitors that don't exist. This is a system that actually runs:- `competitors.py` — point it at a keyword and it ranks the apps already serving it by install base, so you instantly see whether you're walking into a wall of 4.8-star incumbents or a graveyard you can revive.- `painpoints.py` — point it at the weakest-rated big competitor and it mines its 1- and 2-star reviews into frequency-ranked pain themes plus the rawest verbatim quotes. The top complaint is usually your free-tier wedge.- `namecheck.py` — catch a name collision and find the keywords you can actually rank for.A fill-in template turns the output into a brief that ends where it should: a one-line go/no-go. The included worked example runs the whole thing on a real habit-tracker idea (one of the most crowded categories) and still finds a defensible wedge — the live data showed 43 of the leader's recent 1-star reviews raging about forced subscriptions. Every number comes from the live store, not from a language model guessing. No dependencies, ever: standard-library Python, no pip install, no API key, no account, no subscription. It uses Apple's public iTunes Search API and review feed. In the box: the four scripts, the research template, the step-by-step guide, the worked example on live data, and lifetime updates (Pro). Runs in about 30 minutes per idea. iOS / App Store only.About the author — I build and ship iOS apps and production web apps for clients; this product comes straight out of that work.
