December 21, 1972. Virginiatown, Ontario - a mining town small enough to have one bank and one police car.Two armed men walked in timed to the day the local gold mine's payroll arrived. A gas station owner across the street opened fire with his own rifle to scare them off - and it worked, just not the way anyone expected. Their getaway driver fled, leaving both robbers stranded inside with no car. They took the bank manager hostage anyway. Five minutes later they were across the Quebec border, and gone.Nobody was ever caught. And there's a detail about what was happening outside the bank - before the robbers even had the cash in hand - that's never made it into any mainstream account of this case.
