Context: “The Shadow” according to C. G. JungThe Shadow is the set of personality aspects our conscious mind rejects, represses, or fails to recognize: impulses, emotions, desires, traits, and potentials (both “negative” and valuable) that don’t fit our self-image. It is not “evil” in itself, but unintegrated psychic material.How it forms Socialization and the ego complex: from childhood we adopt approved traits and exclude others to sustain an acceptable identity. Repression and mild dissociation: what is not admitted remains outside everyday awareness. Personal and collective archetypes: each person has a personal Shadow; societies also generate collective Shadows (prejudices, taboos, symbolic “enemies”). Key mechanisms Projection: we attribute to others what we cannot tolerate in ourselves (e.g., “he is aggressive” when we avoid acknowledging our own aggressiveness). Projection is the royal road to detecting the Shadow. Acting out: repressed content bursts forth in impulsive behaviors, slips, or dreams. Dream compensation: dreams balance the ego’s one-sidedness by presenting shadow material. Psychological functions Life energy and creativity: the Shadow stores available libido; integrating it releases motivation and originality (“golden Shadow”: disowned talents, unowned greatness). Ethical self-protection: knowing the Shadow reduces hypocrisy and self-deception, enabling moral responsibility. Individuation: its integration is a central step in becoming oneself.
