The Midwest States include: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.Originally created and assembled in order of their admission to the Union, these worksheets have now also been organized according to their regional locations. They will enhance your units on the States, Geography, or US History. Some facts to uncover: Seven US Presidents were born in Ohio, and they were part of the same political party. Why did Santa Fe, Indiana, change their name to Santa Claus? You’ll find tons of interesting information about the O’Leary’s and their cow, and what conditions led to the Chicago Fire in Illinois in 1871. The Pony Express delivered mail between Missouri and California. They lasted only 19 months, but only lost one sack of mail. Michigan fought a brief war with Ohio over ownership of the city of Toledo. Since they gave up their rights, Michigan was awarded the western 2/3’s of the Upper Peninsula. Tons of rivers and lots of rich soil in Iowa. Wisconsin was the last state to balance the slave vs. free pattern. Three states later, the Civil War was upon us. Minnesota’s chimney was the result of an inaccurate survey. Kansas produced the first woman mayor of a US city, and it’s a pretty interesting story. Nebraska gave their southwest corner to Colorado because they didn’t want to deal with the mountains, miners, and gold. North Dakota is in the center of the Wheat Belt, but Rugby, ND, is also the geographic center of North America. There’s a lot of large things happening in South Dakota, from the four presidents set in stone, to “Big John,” the triceratops found in an archeological dig, to the gigantic sculpture of Crazy Horse.
