:Alchemy of the Dao De Jing Chapter 9: Grasp it before it overflows:持而盈之,不如其已;It is better to grasp it before it overflows,揣而銳之,不可長保。If you keep polishing a sharp blade it will not stay sharp for long,金玉滿堂,莫之能守;a hall full of gold and jade cannot be protected,富貴而驕,自遺其咎。Those who are rich, have high status and are arrogant already bequeath punishment on themselves,功遂身退天之道when the work is done retreat back into the Dao of the heavens.Every month we read one chapter of the Dao De Jing from four perspectives:1: Interpreting the script:We read each character by itself and try to understand what the text probably meant when it was written during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods,2: Wang Bi and He Shang Gong Annotations:two of the most famous annotations, these help use understand how early philosophers and Daoists were thinking about the Dao De Jing,3: Huang Yuanji interpretation:Dao De jing Chanwei is the only annotation to deal with the Dao De Jing as an internal alchemy text.4: Modern Chinese interpretation:in the last week we read an entry from a modern Chinese annotation of the Dao De Jing to see how it is understood as present day social philosophy in China.If you are thinking of taking this program you probably have already participated in one or more of the sessions.
